Our Teachers

It is essential that every educator at HMS Richards Adventist School possess a strong foundation in Elementary Education; including denominational and multi-grade certifications to holding at least a bachelor’s degree. We ensure that their credentials are up-to-date, including emergency and safety certifications, and that their commitment to professional growth is unwavering. Our teachers engage in continuous learning and foster collaboration through professional learning communities, ensuring that they remain adept 21st-century educators.

Our educational culture must be rooted in biblical values, with a focus on perpetuating boundless kindness and sharing the love of God. It is crucial that HMS Teachers guide young minds towards Jesus, nurturing their perception of Him as their Creator, Redeemer, and Friend. Teachers and staff should dedicate time each week for prayer with and for our students and their families.

It is our objective to tailor instruction for each student, relying on both formal and informal assessments to gauge their progress. Our educators embrace a versatile and inclusive approach to education, centered around comprehending the distinctive learning styles of every child.

Teacher training is undeniably essential to positively impact student learning. It is through our teachers’ continuous growth that we can deliver the best outcomes for our students. Their dedication to exploring innovative teaching methods, offering individualized instruction, and empowering students to become self-directed learners is at the core of our educational approach. We invest in our teachers’ skills and knowledge, to ensure that they can inspire purpose, joy, and a strong sense of service in our students.

In North America, that includes more than 1,000 schools with 65,000 students in the United States, Canada, and Bermuda.

Physical Education

Each teacher facilitates PE and encourages a healthy, active lifestyle. PE is taught 2-3 days per week in addition to having daily recess time.

Physical education helps students develop skills and confidence. Our elementary and middle school curriculum includes activities that enhance skills such as running, catching, throwing, and striking. These skills are applicable in a variety of sports, including soccer, volleyball, basketball, pickleball, and flag football.

HMS History

Our school has been offering Adventist education since the 1900’s. In 1904, Mr. William Hankins donated six acres of his own land so that a school could be built. In the years that followed, an administration building, and dormitories were built to house children eight years and older so that they could attend a school focused on the love of Jesus and a relationship with Him. Later, a second story was added to meet the growing needs of the school. The children had folding chairs to sit on and orange crates to use as desks.

By 1921, the school was full. To share the tight space, grades 9-12 were taught on the second floor and grades 1-8 were on the first floor of the administration building. In the 1940’s a man named F.A. Page helped raise $2,000 to build a new elementary school; faithful and interested members of the church spent every spare minute and much vacation time working on the new school building. School started that year with windows, but no doors, heat water, or lights. The children came anyway and braved the weather as it got colder and colder. Sometime in November the lights came on and the furnace was lit. The heat felt so good! Church members continued to work that year to make the building more beautiful. Int 1960 it was voted to try a one-year consolidation of the Loveland and Campion elementary schools. It was decided that a new name was needed that did not mean Campion or Loveland. A $25 prize was offered to the child who submitted the willing name. Elder Levi Vixie, when presenting the winning name, quoted Proverb 22:1 “A good name is rather to be chosen than riches.” At this time, our elementary school was named in honor of a 1914 academy graduate and founder of the Voice of Prophecy, Harold Marshall Sylvester Richards. Later as a combined effort, the Loveland and Campion churches decided to combine all grades on the Campion campus and a gymnasium was added. That building is the one we have today.

Since then, our building has grown and changed, and teachers have come and gone. It is still important to remember today that fostering good communication, nurturing lasting relationships, and welcoming the support of our church, parents, community, and volunteers are vital for the academic and spiritual well-being of HMS, ensuring that it continues to prepare today’s youth for citizenship on Earth and in the Kingdom to come.
