Music in Education

Learning, Service, Christianity and Connections to others

As a musician and teacher, I have been asked to give reasons for music in education. Following are concrete, tested and proven outcomes from students in music from the website Music Matters.

Benefits of Music Education

A  Music education prepares students to learn

     1. Enhances fine motor skills

     2. Prepares the brain for achievement

     3. Fosters superior working memory

     4. Cultivates better thinking skills

B  Music education facilitates student academic achievement

    1. Improves recall and retention of verbal information

     2. Advances math achievement

     3. Boosts reading and English language arts (ELA) skills

     4. Improves average SAT scores

C  Music education develops the creative capacities for lifelong success

     1. Sharpens student attentiveness

     2. Strengthens perseverance

     3. Equips students to be creative

     4. Supports better study habits and self-esteem

Pretty good reasons for every student to participate in music, right?

Thankfully, there is an added benefit for Christian education; “Music speaks when words fail.”

  1. Music connects students to the church community through participation.
  2. Music provides a way for students to do outreach.
  3. Music strengthens confidence in sharing God’s love.

In the most difficult times, the apostles sang from the darkness of their prison cells.  It gave them hope, peace and the courage to continue.  May music give our students hope, peace, and the courage to continue the Christian journey.

Melia Williams, K-8 Music Teacher

At HMS Richards Adventist School, our music education program is designed to enhance musical talent and teach every child how to read music, keep rhythm, and develop skills that will serve them throughout their lives.

Our comprehensive approach includes singing, hand bells, recorders, rhythm instruments like Boomwhackers, and musical theater, providing students with a wide range of experiences to broaden their appreciation, talent, and love for music.

The benefits of music education are profound, fostering cognitive development, improving academic performance, and enhancing social skills. By immersing students in various musical activities, we aim to nurture their creativity and instill a lifelong passion for music. Moreover, these musical skills equip our students to serve their church, community, and beyond, using the music to enrich worship services, community events, and other gatherings, thereby fostering a spirit of service and connection through music.

Each year, HMS Richards Adventist School participates in the annual Rocky Mountain Conference Musical Festival, a two-day event open to students in grades 5-8. This festival brings together musical talent from across the state of Colorado, offering students the unique opportunity to sing and perform with their peers from other schools. Guest technicians and musicians are invited to teach and mentor the students, enhancing their musical education and experience. A highlight of the event is the special Friday night concert, featuring performances by the high school choirs, bells, and orchestras from within the Rocky Mountain Conference, creating an inspiring and memorable experience for all attendees.
